London Sinfonietta

London SinfoniettaFormed in 1968, the London Sinfonietta is one of the world's leading contemporary music ensembles and continues to push at the boundaries of new music. It is resident at the South Bank Centre, but regularly performs throughout England and acts as an ambassador for British music through its overseas touring.

"One hundred and sixty of our 215 commissions (75%) have been from British composers, whilst our 2006/07 programme includes 35 pieces by British composers, eight of them new commissions (from Michael Nyman, Bryn Harrison, Phil Cashian, Emily Hall, Kenneth Hesketh, Luke Bedford, Richard Causton, Anthony Payne, and Anna Meredith.

"Forthcoming projects include: three concerts in Turin focusing on music by Maxwell Davies; Emily Hall's first opera, Sante; our Blue Touch Paper initiative supporting talented young composers; a residency with City University; a performance and education projects at the Hay on Wye Festival;  and a new CD series featuring young British composers. The ensemble is also reaching large new audiences, with attendances more than doubling in the last ten years.

The PRS Foundation award is contributing to the ensemble's programme for 2006/07, providing the scope to take artistic risks, develop audiences in new ways, and to develop new artistic and education partnerships."
