PRS Foundation raises £74,447 for new music producers

The PRS Foundation for New Music (PRSF) has been given £74,447 by the Cultural Leadership Programme (CLP). Announced on Monday 3 November, this money will be used to implement PRSF’s New Music Plus…Producers Partnership project, which will provide a unique opportunity for eight talented new music producers to create work with eight prominent venues and cultural organisations in London. The project is developed in association with the hub and is also supported by Arts Council England London, the Mayor of London and Time Out.
The selected producers will receive: a bespoke training course, shaped and directed by associate partner the hub; a business development bursary; and a 12 month placement with one of the partner organisations. The producers will be selected through a nominations process only. The partner organisations are:
- Sound and Music
- Southbank Centre
- Big Chill Festival
- Roundhouse
- BFI
- Tate
- Serpentine Gallery/Pavilion
- Longplayer Trust
Vanessa Reed, Interim Director of the PRS Foundation, said, “This funding from the Cultural Leadership Programme has enabled us to ensure that support for creative collaboration between independent music producers and some of London’s leading cultural institutions is accompanied by skills-based training, mentoring, time for reflection and international research. We hope that the scheme will provide some of our most imaginative and ambitious producers with an opportunity to break beyond the margins of small specialist venues.”
PRSF has instigated many exciting professional development projects, from Take 5 for Jazz artists, to Distil for emerging folk musicians. This is the first programme it has created which focuses on emerging programmer-producers of new music across all genres. It is anticipated that this London-based pilot will create a model which can be rolled out across the rest of the country.
Stuart Brown, Head of Events at BFI said “This partnership offers us a unique opportunity for us to build links with a talented cohort of music producers who we would not usually be able to work with in an intensive way. We look forward to seeing how a music producer will engage with the BFI, particularly our expanding programme of live music and audio visual events to create something really exciting.”
PRSF’s New Music Plus…Producers Partnership received the largest grant of the four first proposals selected for funding through the Cultural Leadership Programme’s “Meeting the Challenge: Development Programme”. This government initiative supports the cultural sector to design and sustain strategies for leadership development. The other successful lead applicants were the National Theatre, Farnham Maltings and the Whoopee Club.
The selected creative producers will be announced at the City Hall launch in February. Watch this space for more news!
