New Music Works!

7th December, 2001

A new collaboration between Arts Council of Wales and the PRS Foundation

New music in Wales is set to benefit substantially from a new funding scheme co-funded by the Arts Council of Wales (ACW) and the PRS Foundation (PRSF).

New Music Works! which will be offered from April 2002, will aim to:

  • significantly increase the number of commissions from Welsh music creators and performances of Welsh new music in Wales
  • increase the number of new works supported in Jazz, World and other currently under-represented genres
  • enable the fees for composers and music creators working in Wales to match those of their counterparts working in the rest of the UK
  • extend the reach of the PRS Foundation throughout Wales.

Simon Lovell-Jones, ACW's Senior Music Officer says:
"With the availability of increased funds, and the involvement of assessors nominated by the Trustees of the PRS Foundation, the work of Welsh composers will gain far greater recognition throughout Wales and beyond.
ACW is delighted to have developed a stronger working relationship with PRSF. This partnership will enable both ACW and PRSF to pool resources and expertise to collectively achieve common goals in the most efficient way possible".

The scheme will be monitored carefully to ensure it is reaching as wide a cross-section of the Welsh creative music community as possible. 2002 will be a pilot year but it is hoped that the scheme will be successful and will continue in the future.

David Francis, Manager of the PRS Foundation says:
"Since its launch in March 2000, PRSF has been committed to encouraging new music and its performance throughout the UK. This new initiative builds on and formalises the good working relationship between PRSF and ACW, providing fresh opportunities and focus for new music and will provide new opportunites for, and bring focus to new music and its creators in Wales".

Both ACW and PRSF have agreed to submit £20,000 each to the new jointly-funded scheme.

Notes to Editors:

Rationale for the new jointly-funded scheme:

PRSF and ACW both currently run schemes aiming to encourage the production and presentation of new music. Strong similarities have been observed between the Music Commissions Scheme run by ACW and the New Works Award run by PRSF, hence the setting up of this new, jointly-funded scheme New Music Works!. Match funding by both organisations will help to enhance the scope of work presently undertaken and will have a significant effect upon composers, performers and the concert-going public in Wales.

The PRS Foundation

The PRS Foundation was launched in March 2000 and is now the UK's largest independent funder solely for new music.

PRSF is an independent charitable company whose overall objective is to increase the public's understanding and appreciation of new music and to encourage, promote and sustain music creation and its performance of all genres and at all levels of activity.
