Steve Mackey

Steve MackeySteve Mackey joined Pulp in 1989. The Sheffield band went on to grow from an underground 80s act to one of the most popular and loved British bands of the 90s. Their wry, often hilarious, observations on class, drugs, love and sex were combined with a wide array of musical styles - from simple acoustic ballads to Bowie-influenced glam dance-rock.

PRSF caught up with Steve to find out about his favourite artists of the moment.

Whitey
WHITEY is one of my favourite new artists. He makes heavy, dirty rock n roll music but I suppose I find it interesting because he's a studio artist which unusual for stuff that sounds like this. Exciting, rough music for dirty, sweaty nightclubs.

Adem
ADEM is a singer songwriter signed to Domino Records. He was formerly a member of FRIDGE (Kieran Hebden from FOURTET's former band). Whereas Keiran has developed his interest in folk music and electronics through samplers and working in the studio, Adem has turned back to a sound much closer to traditional folk, beautiful simple music that sounds very contemporary too - in the same way a Bonnie Prince Billy album does.

Half Cousin
Half Cousin is another singer/songwriter, from Scotland whose music vacillates from folk tinged gentle songs to raging Krautrock chuggers. He's idiosyncratic, an outsider, tender and has a unique sound - clarinets, accordions and most importantly, a rag bag of percussive noise - boxes, coat hangers etc clanging together that give his songs a brilliant backdrop. His new single is out soon on For Us records at the Rough Trade shop in London
