Composer in the House is a new series of composer residencies devised by the PRS Foundation in partnership with the Royal Philharmonic Society. We want to offer composers the time and space to create new work, and to take their place at the heart of the orchestral community. Four residencies are planned with regional UK orchestras.
The first composer to participate in the project is Stephen McNeff who took up his position with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in autumn 2005. As well as writing new works both for the orchestra and for the BSO's new music ensemble, Kokoro, he has been given access to extra rehearsals, the opportunity to try out ideas before the new works reach the concert hall and the chance to work intensively with individual players.
He has also been involved with the artistic life of the orchestra, gained insight into artistic decision making and programming, participated in the organisation’s education programme and helped devise ways to engage audiences with new music. BBC Radio 3 are broadcasting the major new commissions.
